How Nursing Programs Contribute to Learning Outcomes

This research note explores how nursing programs contribute to learning outcomes related to professional values, core competencies, and technical skills. In the 2013-2014 academic year, 24,793 students participated in the Benchworks/AACN undergraduate assessment. Although significant differences exist across the types of degree programs represented in the assessments, the majority of respondents reported that their nursing programs had enabled them to achieve a variety of key learning outcomes related to professional values, core competencies and technical skills.

Skyfactor (formerly EBI-MAP-Works), in partnership with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), created the Benchworks/AACN Nursing Education Assessments to measure the effectiveness of programs from students’ perspectives. These assessments provide insight into the learning outcomes and key dimensions of the program that are the strongest and indicate areas that need to be improved. The knowledge gained from these assessments can drive and sustain continuous improvement of nursing eduation programs and support accreditation efforts.
